Maarten Brijker (b. 1993, Netherlands) is a sound-artist exploring sonic perceptions and ways of collaborating through sound. He is interested in the possibility of sound to evoke mental images and emotional states and its function within storytelling. His work takes the form of performances, sound- installations, video-works, experimental club nights and multimedia music releases. Maarten Brijker holds an MA ArtScience obtained at the Royal Academy of Art, the Hague, and a Bachelor in Economics from the University of Amsterdam. Under the DJ moniker Yon Eta, he performs in clubs and has recently released his debut EP ‘Take me 2 the feeling’. In the recent years, Brijker has released audiovisual works in collaboration with Cinekid, FOAM, EYE Film Institute and Freeform Festival, and performed at Sonic Acts Festival and the Long Progress Bar Festival (UK).
In this exhibition, Maarten Brijker presents a multi-channel sound installation I Hear You, You Hear Me, exploring the intimacy and physicality of sound. Specifically, the work focusses on the textures of voice and its function within human connection and feelings of closeness during isolation. More profoundly, the piece plays with the idea of ‘being’ on a relational level between humans; we exist within the relation to one another. Building on an a personal archive of daily—and intimate—sounds captured during lockdown, combined with voice recordings and sound compositions exploring imagination, the work aims to reflect on the past year. I Hear You, You Hear Me is an ever-evolving soundscape opened by a live performance on the opening night of the exhibition.
