Matas Janušonis
He is a graduate of the Sculpture Department of the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
In his sculptural sound installation Gates, Matas Janušonis engages in spatial and sensorial transformations. The spatial appearance of the installation is composed of two elements – a DIY apparatus playing both sides of a vinyl record simultaneously, and a two-channel speaker, which divides the recording into two separate tracks and the exhibition hall into two spatial fields. Samples of a rhythmical and arrhythmical – i.e., malfunctioning – heart beat recorded on different sides of the record shift their positions in space, distorting and complementing each other, thus dissolving this dichotomy in the viewer’s experience. The physically perceptible vibrations of the beats create a specific atmosphere which seeps into the environment and the viewer, as if providing the soundtrack for their body and inner world, becoming the gateway from an individual to a shared experience.
