Rokas Janušonis
An artist currently studying for an MA in Ceramics at Vilnius Academy of Arts.
Rokas Janušonis (b. 1997) is a sculptor-artist currently also studying for an MA in Ceramics at Vilnius Academy of Arts. In his work, he questions the clichés and functions associated with ceramics. He views clay as a universal, highly plastic material, a tool for expressing ideas, thus combining ceramics with the medium of drawing. This way creating sculptural objects, Janušonis explores the interaction between sculptural forms and drawing, searches for unexpected abstract elements, delves deeper into the relationship between colour and line, and tries to determine the place of the ceramic craft in the general field of contemporary art.
Artwork "Showcase of the Absurd"
The work combines two of the artist’s preferred mediums – drawing and ceramics. By interconnecting various ready-made objects with his own ceramic works, Janušonis raises important questions related to mass production, and reflects upon issues of materiality and sustainable art. With his distinct installation of sculptural objects, the artist subverts the stereotypical image of the showcase, rethinking and rejecting its most important purpose – to sell.
