Viktorijos Damerell
She studied at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Department of Sculpture and was awarded a master’s degree in 2017.
Viktorija Damerell’s installation Session takes an antagonistic view of the classical representation of the human body. The classically ideal body is a physically trained, resting body, the vitality of which is depicted in hard materials such as stone or metal. Session lacks this kind of body; instead it presents an exercise bike in a dark, empty space within a TV screen. The work comments on the contemporary cult of body perfection and its influence on how humans perceive themselves. These bodies do not speak of personal feats, they are all made similar through neurotic training regimes in artificial conditions to reach a temporary ideal.
